Low Sodium Holiday Meals

healthy kids recipes

Here’s an easy way to prepare a low sodium turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. We cooked this turkey crock pot recipe in a medium-sized crockpot with great results. We guarantee you will not have a dry bird at the table if you follow this crockpot recipe. One of the challenges we faced was actually finding a turkey breast that fit into the crock pot. If the breast doesn’t exactly fit entirely into the crock pot, you can cover the top of the bird with metal foil and it will cook just fine.

Low Sodium Meal Ingredients

  • One 7-9 lbs turkey breast
  • Sweet potatoes yams
  • One box low sodium stuffing
  • Heinz low sodium gravy
  • One can golden corn
  • One can cranberry sauce
  • Pumpkin pie or sweet potato pie for dessert

Low Sodium Spices

Add these spices to a crock-pot well coated with olive oil or cooking spray:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ¼ cup chopped celery
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 1 clove garlic (pressed or finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon sage or poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Cooking Times

Turkey is one of the best foods naturally low in sodium. If you buy a frozen turkey breast, let this low sodium frozen meal thaw slowly in the refrigerator for two days prior to cooking. A 7-9 pound turkey breast will have a cooking time of about 8-10 hours in a crock pot, so plan on starting early to plan this meal.
